Angels Cafe will be on the move

Angel’s Cafe will be on the move It’s a landmark in Calgary’s Edworthy Park, but it’s not safe.A recent discovery is forcing Angel’s Cafe, which is located along the Bow River, to move.Owner Cathy Jacobs said after 11 years in the spot, ENMAX figured out a power pole is too close to the building and it poses a danger.“We decided after a couple of hours of processing the news that we were going to have to move from our location as we sit now, they wanted us moved at least 30 feet away,” she told 660 NEWS. “If we have to do that, we might as well build new.”Until the new cafe opens, the City of Calgary is working with Angel’s so it can keep serving up cappuccino, ice cream and other popular treats to nearby residents.ENMAX has issued the following statement:In November 2015, ENMAX received an application that was forwarded through The City of Calgary for Angel’s Café. An ENMAX representative visited the property in January 2016 to assess the electrical installation and its suitability for the new application. An electrical utility pole sits immediately adjacent to the building and is partially held in place by a heavy-duty, tensioned cable (also called guy wire) that is firmly anchored to the ground (see attached photos) to provide stability. Upon inspection, we were surprised to find that a structure had been built that completely surrounds the anchor. The installation completely prevents ENMAX from accessing the infrastructure, but more importantly, poses a significant safety hazard given that the purpose of the anchor is to support the overhead line in place. This anchor, should it ever fail, could cause serious injury or even death to anyone visiting the patio. Given the proximity to a major roadway, the possibility of a vehicle hitting it, is real.Subsequently, we have worked with the business owner and The City on some viable alternatives to relocate the pole. Unfortunately, given the underground water piping and other infrastructure, this is simply not financially feasible for the customer. Instead, they have opted to move their building instead. We will continue to work with them to meet their needs as they proceed with the move.
