Government pitches to include Little Master in the House of Elders

first_imgAfter ruling the cricket pitch for more than two decades, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar could soon find himself on a different turf — the House of Elders, the Rajya Sabha.Headlines Today has learnt that the Centre has nominated the iconic batsman. According to sources, the proposal has come from the highest levels of power — Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Primer Minister Manmohan Singh. If all goes to plan, the 39-year-old, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, would be the first active sportsperson to be nominated to the Upper House. In fact, the government has already sent its recommendations to the President, who is expected to give the final clearance. The president enjoys the right to nominate 12 persons to the Rajya Sabha.Leaders across the political spectrum supported the proposal on Thursday. Congress MP Renuka Chaudhury welcomed the move, saying, “I think it’s great. If it’s true, then we welcome it.” Her party colleague Sandeep Dixit added, “I welcome the idea. He would look great in Rajya Sabha.”The BJP declared its support with Balbir Punj saying, “The BJP welcomes Rajya Sabha offer to Sachin.”It seems Tendulkar too is not averse to the idea. On Thursday, the little master paid a courtesy visit to Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence. He later met PM Manmohan Singh too. This proposal to honour Tendulkar comes close on the heels of growing clamour for the batsman to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. In fact, the Maharashtra government has already nominated Tendulkar’s name for India’s highest civilian award after the Centre recently cleared the way for athletes to receive the award.advertisementTendulkar, widely considered the best batsman of the modern era and one of the greatest of all time, recently reached the milestone of 100 centuries in international cricket — 51 of them in Tests and 49 in one-day internationals.Apart from this previously unimaginable feat, the little master, as he is fondly called, holds most of the major batting records in both forms of cricket as well. However, the proposal has also sparked speculation that Tendulkar’s retirement may be around the corner. BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha said, “It’s high time he quits before he is asked to. He must behave like a guru.”last_img read more
