Can You Search for Responsive Themes in the Repository?

first_imgI knew you could search for responsive themes on hosted But I wasn’t sure if you could do the same search on I visited the theme repository, but didn’t see the same type of filtering options to find responsive themes. Theme repository filter optionsWondering if he knew, I tweeted to Morten Rand-Hendrickson, commenting about responsive themes:@mor10 No option to select “responsive” layout in theme search.— Deborah Edwards-Onoro (@redcrew) September 7, 2016Morten replied that he thought all themes on the repository were responsive, but he wasn’t sure. After some further tweets, Sami Keijonen pointed me to a post from the WordPress Theme Review Team, announcing new theme tags in May 2016. New WordPress Theme TagsThe new theme tags offered more subject tags for better categorization of themes. Sounds like a good plan, to make it easier to find themes based on specific topics. If you want a list of all the available tags, check Theme Tags. So what tags were removed? All color tags, the “photoblogging” and “seasonal” tags. And several layout tags, including “responsive-layout.”I was a bit puzzled. Since Google’s mobile-friendly ranking announcement in early 2015, every person I’ve spoken with wants to make sure their site is responsive. Why Responsive-Layout Was RemovedFrom what I read in the post, the “responsive-layout” tag was the most searched layout tag in the repository. Which made me curious why it was removed.Justin Tadlock commented in the post:When a tag is always used by themes and by users, it becomes practically useless in distinguishing themes from one another.Brad Griffin replied in the post, with a use case I thought was likely: Users come to the repositoryFind an appropriate themeInstall the themeAfter customizing the theme and adding their content, users are disappointed when they discover the theme isn’t responsive. And they get frustrated with the theme repository search filters for not providing an option for mobile-friendly themes. Further InvestigationI was still confused. I couldn’t find anything to indicate all themes in the repository were [email protected] Yes, thx. I believe that’s post you sent before. Unless I missed it, nothing to indicate all themes are responsive. cc @mor10— DeborahEdwards-Onoro (@redcrew) September 8, 2016 It all started with a question during Joe O’Connor’s WordPress session at our group meeting room at last week’s Accessibility Summit online conference. Can you search for responsive themes in the theme repository? So I visited posts linked from the theme tags announcement, to learn the background about removing the “responsive-layout” theme tag. And I tweeted back to Sami Keijonen, saying I probably shouldn’t assume all themes were responsive. He graciously answered my follow-up question. @redcrew Correct, not all (old) themes are responsive. But old themes doesn’t show up in search.— Sami Keijonen (@samikeijonen) September 8, 2016Aha, that works. And what about new themes added to the repository, should we expect all of them to be responsive? @samikeijonen Ok. Should I assume all new themes added to the repository are responsive?— DeborahEdwards-Onoro (@redcrew) September 8, 2016I didn’t receive a reply, so I did more research. The Theme Review Team requirements page doesn’t list responsive-layout as a requirement. But the theme recommendations page does ask if the theme is responsive. For theme creators, the recommendations page offers best practices suggestions, but their recommendations are not considered essential. ConclusionTook me a while, but here’s what I discovered:There is no responsive-layout or mobile-friendly tag in the WordPress theme repositoryOld themes in the WordPress theme repository may not be responsive. But old themes won’t show up in a repository theme search.New themes may or may not have a responsive design, since having a responsive design is not a requirement for a theme to be approved for the theme repository. It is a recommended practice.According to the Theme Review Team:The recommended items are there to make sure your theme is the best it can be and good advice to include as best practice. My thoughts? If you’re looking for a responsive theme on the theme repository, and you’re not sure if it’s responsive, contact the developer directly to ask about the theme. Personally, given Google’s mobile-friendly ranking change, I assume anyone creating a WordPress theme would make it responsive. The Dangers of Loud “Business Talking” in Public

first_imgI remember in early days of my career, back in the late 90’s, I was trained to be mindful of business conversations in public.  Working at a Big 5 public accounting firm, we were told that it is best not to speak about business in public.  There were also guidelines given:If you must, keep your voice low so that others cannot hear what you say.Never mention client organization names, nor individual names.  If you refer to someone, only use their first name, never the last.  NEVER complain about a client in public.Do not use backpacks or briefcases with the company name on them.  There is a risk of behavior that may reflect poorly on the organization.  Additionally, if you happen to speak about a client, everyone will know where you work.Never talk about organizational strategy, plans or confidential details while in public.I bring this up because as I write this, I am on an airplane, using earbuds.  I arrived quite early for my flight and while waiting in the terminal, a gentleman near me began talking loud enough for everyone in the area to hear.  He proceeded to take call after call, with clients and co-workers, all while speaking so loud we could not help buy overhear his plans.  Now, he and his colleague are seated behind me sharing every detail of their business plans.  I can now tell you how they plan to have their teams address each market, what they plan to do to grow from $2.5 M to $17 M in revenue this year, what they are worried about, etc.  I can tell you about the funds they are managing.I remember early in my career I overheard a group of men at a restaurant sharing very detailed financial data over dinner.  I politely walked over and whispered to one of the men that everyone was picking up what they were saying.  He was completely surprised and acted as if it never crossed their mind.  They thanked me and promptly changed the subject.  That was 20 years ago.I would think by now that business professionals would not risk their organization’s proprietary information, but it still happens.  Are companies not training employees about use of sensitive information?  The danger of having certain things get out can ruin the reputation of the organization and the individual who is sharing.  It can put customers at risk.  And depending on what is shared, it could cause huge liability to the organization, and could even be illegal.Have you experienced this?  What’s the most interesting information you’ve overheard at an airport, on a train, or at a restaurant?  Did you intervene, or just let the person keep sharing?  I’d love to hear how you’ve handled this. Opera 9.6 Launches, Now Includes Magazine-Style RSS…Sort Of

first_imgToday, Opera revealed the newest version of their web browser, Opera 9.6. As always, the latest update includes speed and performance increases, but the update delivers several new features, too. The one new feature that we were really excited to try out is how Opera 9.6 deals with RSS feeds. In this latest version of the browser, you can preview your feeds in an attractive magazine-style layout. But what we really wanted to know is could read your feeds like this once subscribed?Magazine-Style FeedsIn Opera 9.6, a new feed preview feature has been introduced that turns any RSS feed into a magazine-style page where the articles in an feed appear as columns. (See image below). With the feeds laid out in this manner, suddenly RSS reading becomes accessible, understandable, and far less geeky than its acronym implies. Although heavy RSS users and techie folks will probably continue to use an RSS reader like Google Reader, a magazine-style layout is a great option for a light reader or someone new to RSS. With Feedly installed, you can view your Google Reader feeds in an easy-to-read format while still being able to hop into your different folders. Of course, Feedly does so much more than just change the layout of Google Reader, but that’s a whole othertopic. The difference between Feedly’s magazine interface and what Opera does is that Opera only displays feeds in this manner when you preview them while deciding whether or not to subscribe. That’s disappointing. We were hoping that Opera would include this as a new option under the “Display -> View” settings in Opera’s built-in RSS reader, too. Unfortunately, those view settings have remained the same. Feed reading there is still an inbox-like experience, with feeds titles in one window and the articles in a second window. This familiar Outlook format works for some people, we’re sure, but to have the magazine-style option here as well would have been a nice treat. Other New FeaturesIn addition to the preview feeds feature, Opera 9.6 also adds other updates, including the following:Expanded Opera Link: Opera Link is one of the browser’s best features. With it, you have access to your data from any computer or mobile device. It synchronizes your bookmarks, Speed Dial, notes taken in your Opera browser, and personal bar. With the update to Opera 9.6, Opera Link now lets you take your favorite search engines and browser history with you, too.Optimized Opera Mail: Opera’s built-in e-mail client, Opera Mail, now includes “low-bandwidth mode” to retrieve mails even faster when bandwidth is limited. This is great for when you’re on the road and trying to use your air card in a bad spot where the signal isn’t very strong. Prioritized e-mail: Opera Mail has two new ways to manage e-mail conversations. Keep an eye on important threads and contacts by following them, or ignore less important threads and contacts with a single click. Looks like you can start to manage your information overload with this. Increased speed: Opera 9.6 improves the quick responsiveness and page loading of Opera 9.5.Improved fluency: Opera added support for Indonesian, Ukrainian, Estonian, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil languages. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Government pitches to include Little Master in the House of Elders

first_imgAfter ruling the cricket pitch for more than two decades, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar could soon find himself on a different turf — the House of Elders, the Rajya Sabha.Headlines Today has learnt that the Centre has nominated the iconic batsman. According to sources, the proposal has come from the highest levels of power — Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Primer Minister Manmohan Singh. If all goes to plan, the 39-year-old, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, would be the first active sportsperson to be nominated to the Upper House. In fact, the government has already sent its recommendations to the President, who is expected to give the final clearance. The president enjoys the right to nominate 12 persons to the Rajya Sabha.Leaders across the political spectrum supported the proposal on Thursday. Congress MP Renuka Chaudhury welcomed the move, saying, “I think it’s great. If it’s true, then we welcome it.” Her party colleague Sandeep Dixit added, “I welcome the idea. He would look great in Rajya Sabha.”The BJP declared its support with Balbir Punj saying, “The BJP welcomes Rajya Sabha offer to Sachin.”It seems Tendulkar too is not averse to the idea. On Thursday, the little master paid a courtesy visit to Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence. He later met PM Manmohan Singh too. This proposal to honour Tendulkar comes close on the heels of growing clamour for the batsman to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. In fact, the Maharashtra government has already nominated Tendulkar’s name for India’s highest civilian award after the Centre recently cleared the way for athletes to receive the award.advertisementTendulkar, widely considered the best batsman of the modern era and one of the greatest of all time, recently reached the milestone of 100 centuries in international cricket — 51 of them in Tests and 49 in one-day internationals.Apart from this previously unimaginable feat, the little master, as he is fondly called, holds most of the major batting records in both forms of cricket as well. However, the proposal has also sparked speculation that Tendulkar’s retirement may be around the corner. BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha said, “It’s high time he quits before he is asked to. He must behave like a guru.”last_img read more

Competing Online: Are Small Businesses At A Disadvantage In Search Advertising?

center_img There are two common ways that businesses use search enginesto drive traffic to their websites: ”.) Spend time finding the right , stay tuned.] If you’re already spending money on paid search advertising, make sure you monitor your results closely.  If you are in a competitive industry, chances are, you’ve already seen an increase in the average price per click you are paying.  Make sure that the value you are getting from these clicks warrant the increased price.
