Govt. commits Additional $14 Million to Tackle Dengue

first_imgGovt. commits Additional $14 Million to Tackle Dengue Health & WellnessOctober 11, 2012 Advertisements RelatedGovt. commits Additional $14 Million to Tackle Dengue FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, says the Government has committed an additional $14 million to tackle the dengue problem, of which $4 million is designed for the health regions, $4 million for public education and $6 million for vector control.  Dr. Ferguson, who was speaking  today  (October 11), during a press briefing at his downtown Kingston offices, informed that the Government has so far spent $11.5 million as part of its activities to control the spread of the illness. He noted that of this amount, $3 million was disbursed to the four health regions, while an additional $5 million was used for vector control and $3.5 million went towards public education efforts. The Minister gave an assurance that the Ministry is doing all it can to limit the outbreak of dengue fever across the island. He noted that the Government has employed a “joined-up government” approach in an effort to reduce the mosquito population across the island, by working closely with the Ministers of Local Government and Community Development and Transport and Works, as well as the various Mayors, to target important breeding sites. Dr. Ferguson said the mosquito reduction strategies include the fogging of some 800 communities across the island; source reduction, which involves treatment and destruction of mosquito breeding sites, as well as public education. He noted that so far some 450 communities have been fogged; over 3,500 premises visited and approximately 5,000 containers inspected. “All containers found to be breeding sites for the aedes aegyti mosquito, which transmits dengue, have been treated,” the Minister said. He pointed out that the intensified programme is expected to last until December 2012, but will be continued beyond that date if the need arises. The Minister confirmed an increase in dengue fever cases for this year, noting that as at September 29, there were a total of 1,215 suspected cases, of which 345 had been confirmed. This compared to 887 cases in 2011 and 3,202 in 2010, which had been regarded as an outbreak year. There have also been five suspected deaths associated with the disease, with one confirmed case, via autopsy. The victim was a 15 year-old male of Kingston and St. Andrew, who also had the sickle cell disease. Dr. Ferguson said all parishes have been affected to date, with Kingston and St. Andrew showing the highest incidence of the disease, with 599 or 50 per cent of the cases. The breakdown of suspected cases in the other parishes include: 71 cases in St. Catherine; six in St. Thomas; 19 in Portland; 36 in St. Mary; 67 in St. Ann; 20 in Trelawny; 66 in St. James; 38 in Westmoreland; 24 in Hanover; 30 in St. Elizabeth; Manchester, 128; and Clarendon, 82. There are an additional 29 cases for which no parish has been designated. In the meantime, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Coombs, called on Jamaicans to play their part in reducing the spread of the disease by destroying the breeding sites of mosquitoes. “It cannot be overstated that we need the assistance of every householder…in breaking the transmission cycle of this disease by dealing with the vectors, which breeds around your homes,” he said. For his part, Director, Health Promotion and Prevention Branch, MOH, Dr. Kevin Harvey, cautioned that the symptoms of dengue fever often resemble those of other illnesses, including gastroenteritis and influenza. “Dengue resembles the flu, it has flu-like symptoms, and in fact it can sometimes resemble various other (illnesses), so you have be careful in labelling everything dengue,” he said. “You must (therefore) get a proper assessment from a physician to determine exactly what is going on,” he advised.                                                         DENGUE FACTS: ·        Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the aedes aegyti mosquito. ·        The virus can only be transmitted when the mosquito bites an infected person and then bites someone else. Symptoms of the illness include: pain behind the eyes; joint and muscle pain; weakness, fever, nausea, swollen lymph nodes, vomiting and possibly a rash. center_img RelatedGovt. commits Additional $14 Million to Tackle Dengue RelatedGovt. commits Additional $14 Million to Tackle Denguelast_img read more

NYC zoos, aquarium plan to reopen this month

first_imgShare on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedinShare via Email Share via Shortlink (Getty)New York City’s zoos and aquarium are planning to open later this month, along with museums and movie theaters. While the definitive reopening of the attractions has not yet been announced, many expect New York City to enter phase 4 on July 20, at the earliest, the New York Times reported. The city entered phase 3 earlier this week.In anticipation of phase 4, the zoos in Central Park, Prospect Park, the Bronx and Queens, and the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, are planning to open their doors to the public on July 24. Employee and visitor occupancy levels will have to be kept to one-third of normal levels. The five facilities will adopt additional measures to keep visitors safe, including timed ticketing, to keep the numbers of zoo-goers at manageable levels. Some potentially high-risk features will remain closed — like camel rides and the 4D theater — but indoor and outdoor activities alike are expected to resume.Unlike theaters and New York City’s office buildings, the zoos and aquarium were never fully emptied out, even at the height of the shut-down. The permanent residents — the animals — remained, and essential worker employees continued to care for them. When the zoos reopen, healthcare workers will be allowed to attend for free.[NYT] — Georgia Kromrei Share via Shortlinkcenter_img TagsCoronaviruslast_img read more

Russian investment bank expands in SA

first_img“This transaction is a strategic quantum leap for BJM Securities, presenting it with a strong and enviable growth path into frontier markets,” said BJM group CEO Andile Mazwai. “We believe that Renaissance represents a best-fit for BJM Securities for its unique geographic footprint, its winning culture and adventurous spirit.” In 2009, Renaissance Capital topped the league tables on London’s AIM market, acting on more equity capital markets and merger and acquisition transactions than any other investment bank. Russian-based emerging markets investment bank Renaissance Capital is to acquire the whole of BJM Securities, the brokerage business of South Africa’s Barnard Jacobs Mellet group, for about R207-million. Founded in 1985, BJM Securities is the leading independent full service broker-dealer in South Africa, and is known for its outstanding research franchise, having been ranked first in South African research surveys. Renaissance Capital announced its entry into South Africa in February this year and appointed Clifford Sacks, former South Africa co-CEO at Merrill Lynch, to lead its South African and pan-African equities businesses, and the acquisition will significantly increase the firm’s presence in the country. “When completed, the acquisition will mark a major step in building the first truly pan-African investment banking franchise stretching from the Cape to Cairo.” 4 May 2010 National resources transactionscenter_img It entered Africa in 2007, and today maintains offices in Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia and Ghana, and was one of the most active dealmakers on the continent last year, executing 18 transactions in 10 countries, and has carved out a particular niche in natural resources transactions in the oil, gas, mining and agricultural sectors. Over the last 12 months it has raised US$5.8-billion in equity and debt capital for clients in those sectors globally. IPL spot-fixing scam: Preserving cricket’s purity will be priority, says Justice RM Lodha

first_imgFormer Chief Justice of India R.M. Lodha will lead a three-member panel to decide on the quantum of punishment to be handed out to Gurunath Meiyappan, Raj Kundra, CSK and RR.Former Chief Justice of India, Rajendra Mal Lodha has his task cut out as chairman of the Supreme Court appointed committee that will decide on quantum of punishment to be imposed on Gurunath Meiyappan, Raj Kundra and the two IPL teams under scanner.Besides, the panel will also examine and make suitable recommendations to the BCCI Rules, Memorandum of Association and regulations to deal with various contentious issues listed in the judgment including how to avoid conflict of interest situations. The decision of the panel will be eagerly awaited by cricket lovers across the country. Justice Lodha, on his part, said the panel will do everything possible to bring in “transparency and accountability” in cricket administration. He also said the panel will go by the directives of the court aimed at preserving the “purity of the game.”Besides Lodha, the panel also comprises of retired Supreme Court judges justice Ashok Bhan and R.V. Raveendran.”Cricket needs to be saved and we will ensure that the fans are not disappointed. We will do our best to bring in transparency and accountability,” Justice Lodha told MAIL TODAY.The fate of N. Srinivasan’s son-in- law and Chennai Super Kings Team Principal Meiyappan as also Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra – found guilty of betting and having links with bookies by the Supreme Court – hinges on him.advertisementVirtually spelling the endgame for the two top IPL teams, a bench of Justices T.S. Thakur and M.I. Kalifullah said the franchises should also face punishment for the acts committed by its team officials. While the punishment for the officials can range between warning to suspension for a lifetime depending upon the nature and the gravity of the offence committed, the franchises could even be scrapped.”The judgment has been given by the highest court of the land and we will go by the several sweeping directions aimed at preserving the purity of the game,” Lodha said. The panel headed by him will also examine the role of IPL COO Sundar Raman with the help of investigating team earlier constituted by the court under IPS officer B.B. Mishra. The panel has been given six months to submit a report to the Supreme Court. The court had scrapped an amendment to the Rule 6.2.4 of the BCCI which allowed administrators (like Srinivasan) to own a team saying “it is the true villain in the situation at hand”.”An amendment which perpetuates such a conflict of interest cannot be countenanced and shall have to be struck down,” said the court.”Justice Lodha as the chairman of the new panel to prescribe punishment is a good choice. He will consider all aspects and weigh all options being a true lover of the game,” said justice Mukul Mudgal when his opinion was sought about him.The court had noted that it doesn’t want to give BCCI the power to impose the punishment as it won’t be “appropriate.”It handed the responsibility on the panel saying it would make the entire process “objective and transparent.” “One of the issues that would fall for determination in the light of these findings would be whether we should impose a suitable punishment ourselves or leave it to the BCCI to do the needful. Having given our anxious consideration to that aspect we are of the view that neither of these two courses would be appropriate,” the bench said on Thursday.last_img read more

Why Apple Is Always On The Digg Front Page — And You’re Not

first_img StumbleUponis, my opinion, the best of these three options to promote a nichewebsite. You get traffic sometimes right from the first vote you get, when someone does discover your site. You can get up to 200 visitorsjust by being submitted. Thatshould of course not be your only goal. You can get popular on StumbleUpon aswell, although the antiquated front page metaphor stemming fromnewspapers does not work here. StumbleUpon is nonlinear and more “What’s good for General Motors is what’s good for the country”? With respect to social media sites like del.icio.us if you offer some valuable online resources users might want to come back for, online tools, big lists, tutorials Originally published Nov 30, 2007 10:53:00 AM, updated March 21 2013 In summary, it is good to understand the culture and goals of the social media sites. Don’t try to get on the front page of digg if you don’t have content that you think will likely appeal to its users. social news StumbleUpon a strong opinion on a popular topic if you sport a great design Like onDigg you need approx. 80 – 90 users to bookmark you in a short time periods to get popular and end up on the front page. If you’re If you manage to convince something between 60 – 90 other diggers toDigg it within less than 24 hours after submitting you will end up on thefront page. Unless your article gets buried. Which is pretty likely tohappen, especially if the digg user base thinks the article is spam orlame. . site out there. Digg is a great place for you to get big spikes in traffic if you arecreating content that is interesting and not overly promotional. Ifyou can’t do this, don’t waste your time on digg. You’re unlikely toget many diggs or much traffic. WhileDigg is about social news (which is often time-sensitive), del.icio.us ismore about saving links to websites you would want to return to. Thusresources, online tools or magazines and blogs which you will want tovisit at least twice will perform well at del.icio.us Digg .So, many (naive) people think: If Apple can get on the front page ofdigg so often, why can’t I? There’s a simple answer to this: You’renot Apple and you’re unlikely to get the loyal following that Applehas. So, what do you do to help promote your business on the socialmedia? This article looks at some of the top social media sites andwill help you understand them and how they work. . That means you either invest several months todigg and submit many stories as well as gain many friends onDigg .Or you contact a power user who already has done that. The average JohnDoe user has only minor chances to get on the front page, even if thecontent is brilliant. It’s just hard to rise above the noise.. you still won’t get traffic. A front page appearance might yield 5 – 10.000 visits though. UnlikeDigg where you disappear in the archives after a day you can get popularlater too. You just need a large amount of new bookmarks in a shorttime span at some point. so do not submit toDigg unless you have some confidence that your content will be interestingto the digg community.Otherwise it’s a waste of time and veryfrustrating, especially if you get buried and flamed. if you blog regularly and offer original content just popular The above is based on an article from a guest author, Tadeusz Szewczyk(you can call him “Tad”). You can find more of Tad’s writings at his To get on theDigg front page, it helps to be a Digg something green, organic and/or sustainable site. You probably know bookmarking in your browser (Internet Explorerusers call these “Favorites”). So, basically social bookmarking allowsyou to share bookmarks with others and store them online. Thus you canaccess them from anywhere on any computer. Even if you do not want todo that you still might want to use del.ici.us as by now it has such something strange, unusual or spectacular Remember the famous sentence social discovery tool Some people mistakeDigg for a social bookmarking site like del.icio.us (see below) which it is not. You do not useDigg to collect your bookmarks online. Many bloggers already get more traffic via StumbleUpon than any other source (including Google) is neither social news nor social bookmarking.SU describes itself as a .You can get popular in such a channel. If you manage to do that, youcan get more than 10,000 visitors. The traffic does not come all atonce, it’s more evenly distributed and comes in bursts. You can evenget popular with the same post or page twice or several times. You want to tell the world something important. like mentioned above is a del.icio.us ,as you browse the web with your peers and get suggested other websitesaccording to your interests, other sites you already visited and ratedas well as based on what your friends did. So you get automaticrecommendations out of the pages your friends submit or rate. to find websites you would normally not visit. The official term by now is StumbleUpon You won’t get any significant traffic if you’re not up front In shortDigg is a place where pages end up being popular which you want others to know:Like “Bush has invaded Iran” for instance would be news. Ask yourteenage son first before submitting if he would want his friends toknow. What’s good for Apple is not necessarily good for you or yourbusiness. You might want to promote your site on del.icio.us Digg is a social news site. In fact it’s the most popular if you not only sell something but also offer something for free Withdel.icio.us you won’t have to make friends first to become “popular” asit’s a more down-to-earth platform with no comments or “bury features”.You can succeed in your own niche if you offer what others areinterested in. a critical mass that often you can find better resources there than in Google or elsewhere On social media sites likeDigg, users love Apple marketing, Apple news and just about all things Apple. comparable to TV with plenty of channels You will perform well on StumbleUpon with social bookmarking pictures, other funny or outstanding ones, so hire a photographer or caricaturist if you also appeal to the international market, as del.icio.us is used all over the world power user and get some friends. In fact you should stumble at least 50 sitesbefore trying to promote your own content. StumbleUpon has a largeuser base (over 3 million), an advanced rating system and some extrafeatures other social sites lack because StumbleUpon makes you downloada toolbar. .StumbleUpon is a place where people concentrate on their favoritetopics or hobby. So you even can stumble just sites about marketing, ifyou’re a marketing consultant. You will find like-minded people there. but you should not submit your site yourself to promote it but at firstmingle with other stumblers with similar interests. Try to make friendsby submitting great sites. Saying something nice about SU and SU usersdoesn’t hurt either. Therefore do not stumble 10 different subpages ofyour site but look for something useful or spectacular if you want somefriends. Don’t forget to share this post! AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to Email AppEmail AppShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to MessengerMessengerShare to SlackSlack You do not necessarily need to be a power user to be noticed on StumbleUpon It’ssocial news. Social news means that links are submitted if they arehighly relevant at a given moment, like breaking news for instance. Ifyou submit a news story you do it, ideally, out of altruistic motives: In fact Apple product news are regularly the most popular posts on SEO 2.0 blog social browsing digg, is what’s good for Apple also good for you and your business? I don’t think so.last_img read more

Why IT Shouldn’t Be Involved in Marketing Software Decisions

first_img Originally published Feb 22, 2010 8:30:00 AM, updated October 01 2019 This post is part 1 of 2 posts regarding the debate about the role  Internet technology (IT) departments should play in making marketing software decisions. Read part 2, “Why IT SHOULD Be Involved in Marketing Software Decisions,” which offers an alternative viewpoint.Without a doubt, I know Content Management Systems. Over the past 15 years working in Web marketing and development, I have come to know the in’s-and-out’s of content management. As a result, I’ve been able to respond to feature requests, plan out development cycles and show the value of a platform. Regardless of how I was involved with a CMS project, there always seemed to be the same speed-bump: the IT team.IT, or IS (Information Systems), play a much needed role in any company, and things would likely fall apart without their expertise. But that expertise does not extend into marketing decisions. Ultimately, I believe that the marketing teams are as much to blame for my rant, but it seems that IT always gets involved with making a marketing decision, which never made much sense to me.I see the logic: a CMS is software; software runs on computers; IT makes our computer decisions; IT should be involved in selecting a CMS. Also, it’s not often that someone outside of IT will do software purchasing. But in the end, the role of IT should be incredibly limited when it comes to Web Content Management. Here is why:1. Your IT team can’t handle the project.  Unless you have a specific Web development team or have done a complete Web redesign and deployment in the past 3 years, your IT employees are not prepared for this project. Because of this, your IT staff will make a decision based on how easy they think it will be for them to develop and deploy. Ease of deployment should be a requirement, but shouldn’t supersede your other marketing needs.2. IT does not want to own the maintenence.  After the dust settles, your IT team does not want to be involved with maintaining your software. I recently spent a 7-hour car trip with a college friend that works in Information Systems for a large organization. He explained to me that every new piece of software that comes through the doors requires someone in IS to become an expert. Because of this, the team starts to thin its resources between CRM, CMS, ERP, DMS, and any other system that can be described in three-letters. This is on top of the day-to-day management of information infrastructures in the company (e.g. maintaining work stations, fixing phones, keeping the network running, removing your viruses, etc.). By involving IT in your CMS decision, you are burdening that department with software that they do not want to maintain.3. IT does not understand marketing.  Unless IT involves you in network security decisions, they should not be involved in your marketing decisions. As much as CMS vendors will fight this statement, a CMS is quickly becoming a commodity. Because of this, you need to find a system that best fits your team & your needs. Test driving is critically important. If your IT staff won’t be the everyday users of the CMS, their idea of usability will not be the same as yours.Because large Web projects like redesigns and CMS implementations are such infrequent projects, it is important to have a full strategy in place. To this end, it is in the project’s best interest for you to hire a service partner that does this on a regular basis. Many will already have CMS experience, be CMS neutral and will be better equipped to help you make a decision. At the end of the day, your IT department will appreciate you for not getting them involved in the decision. If they don’t, just give them a peace offering of donuts. Read part 2, “Why IT SHOULD Be Involved in Marketing Software Decisions.”  Which side will you take? 4 Excellent Examples of Creative Google+ Business Pages

first_imgWhen Google+ launched, companies were at a loss trying to find a way to utilize the new social network for business. But with this week’s launch of Google+ business pages (including HubSpot’s own Google+ page!), we’ve seen some early adopters start experimenting with the possibilities and limitations of the new feature. Some just dipped their toes in the water; others dove in headfirst. Let’s take a look at a few of the companies that are already getting creative with Google+ business pages.Fox News Special ReportWe all saw the huge role of social media in President Obama’s campaign and election in 2008, and it looks like the GOP is following suit by experimenting with the Google+ business page Hangout feature. Starting November 15, Special Report on Fox News will be hosting a series of Google+ Hangouts with GOP presidential candidates, starting with Governor Mitt Romney. Although only 10 people can actively participate in a Hangout, there’s no limit to the number of Hangout viewers (Note: This feature, called Hangouts on Air, is currently only available to certain businesses. Google+ has not yet indicated when it will be available to all.). To determine who gets to participate, they’ve asked followers to leave comments detailing what they would ask Governor Romney, and why they should be selected to chat in the Hangout. What you can learn from Special Report: Google+ Hangouts present a lower barrier to entry than something like a webinar, so regardless of your business, they could help you open up and feed the top of your sales funnel. Experiment with hosting informational, interactive, and industry-specific Hangout sessions on your own Google+ business page (and keep your fingers crossed that Google+ will enable Hangouts on Air for all businesses soon!).Time MagazineIn the short time Google+ business pages have been available, Time has already figured out a way to take its features to the next level. Because Time knows it has an audience with diverse interests, it’s testing topic Circles tailored to different subject matters. The first Circle it’s testing is Technology, with the hopes that tech followers will be able to easily identify stories they care about, rather than be inundated with other content that’s of little interest. What you can learn from Time: While Google+ business page features are limited right now, it’s crucial to experiment with them and find a creative way to make your follower’s experience more meaningful. By customizing your Google+ Page to fit your audience, you’ll have a more user-friendly page and be better able to provide followers with content they care about. Consider testing out your own topic Circles to help you deliver relevant content to segmented groups within your business’ target audience.YouTubeYou’d better believe YouTube has a Google+ Page, and though many page owners are already asking for more robust YouTube-Google+ integration, it hasn’t stopped the online video sharing giant from making good use of the embedded video functionality, allowing followers to watch, comment on, and share video without leaving the page. The first video YouTube shared on its page was fittingly the first video ever uploaded to YouTube, a great move to get new followers excited about the YouTube experience. And they’re not just sharing videos; they’ve syndicated their blog content for the Google+ business page, too, bringing a microblogging feel over to the new social network. What you can learn from YouTube: Take your new and popular content and find a new audience for it over at your Google+ business pages.
