The D-ITP is a consortium of theoretical physicists from the University of Amsterdam, Leiden University and Utrecht University, and was awarded the prestigious NWO Gravitation grant in November 2012, enabling it to unfold an ambitious research and training program. The research program is based on three themes: cosmological matter (black holes, dark matter/dark energy), quantum matter (superconductors/superfluids, ultra-cold atomic gases), and topological matter (topological insulators, quantum computers). The ambition is to make essential contributions towards the resolution of outstanding problems on the nature and structure of these forms of matter. The PhD position will be based at the University of Amsterdam, with Ben Freivogel and Jan Pieter van der Schaar acting as the main supervisors. To contribute to a primary aim of the D-ITP, which is to deepen the collaborations between its participating research centers and themes, the other members of the cosmology section will be involved in the program and guidance of the PhD candidate.EligibilitySuccessful applicants will have outstanding academic grades and should have obtained, or be about to obtain, a Masters degree in theoretical physics which includes a strong foundation in quantum field theory and general relativity. Note that PhD students are also expected to be fluent in English.ScholarshipThe appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 4 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis).
